PROJECT

The intent of the landscape design was to create a playful environment that promotes a strong indoor-outdoor relationship and inspires students to spend extended time outdoors.

The front of this new K-4 elementary school has been designed to have a more formal and urban flair, while the back of the school has been planned as a play, sport and natural learning environment. It includes a rubber play area with small hills and a ball wall against the gym. A substantial grass hill has been shaped using excavation material from the school construction for summer and winter fun, along with a rain garden featuring a log balance bridge.

To the North a regional pathway separates the school grounds from the adjacent play fields and connects to the regional trail system.

The theme for this school site has been inspired by the many migrating birds within the area. The designated play areas have shapes reminiscent of birds and celebrating the praire history of the community. The playgrounds are surrounded by concrete walkways weaving the various play areas together. Groups of trees are planted in the concrete pathways helping to intertwine the play areas. The tree islands now have a crucial role in many tag games.

Hugh A. Bennett School was certified LEED Gold in 2018.
