The intent of this Master Plan was to provide a long-term vision for the development of the Red Deer College residence zone. The Master Plan was developed through collaborative workshops, presentations and community engagement. The primary goal of the design was to create a vibrant campus life that implements the key values of the College.
A guiding principle of the design was to create a vibrant, pedestrian-friendly urban zone and street-front, ensuring strong pedestrian connections and links to the main campus and existing trails, and integrating the natural features of the site, such as the existing wetlands and berms. Naturally, the sun, wind and orientation were carefully considered.
The final concept of the Master Plan was creatively organized into three different zones, including a south-facing urban edge with a vibrant street-front; the resident buildings, with tucked-away parking to the north of the buildings; and a ‘natural’ zone, with existing wetland and berms, along with trail connections. Therefore, all future development phases have an urban, a building, a parking, and a ‘natural’ component in them
As the timeline and scope of these future phases of the Future Residence Zone have yet to be determined, flexibility for future implementation has been greatly considered in the design.
PHASE 1
Consistent with the previously developed master plan the site of the first Phase of the Red Deer College Residence is positioned far enough south on site to provide an urban street frontage while leaving enough space for a vibrant urban plaza/ park area. The undulation of the natural berming on site has been continued in this area. Grassed berms add variance and playfulness to the frontage and create a landscape that can seamlessly blend the building with its surroundings.
The parking to the east of the building double functions as a basketball area when not in use.
