PROJECT

-

Inspired by the outdoor lifestyle of Southern France, the intent of this project was to create a space that offered the ease, beauty and casualness of outdoor living set in its’ parkland context.

An Edmonton family bought this beautiful land neighbouring Elk Island National Park and built a studio, as well as a pocket house, on the high point of the land, which featured exquisite views of Trappers Lake.

Both the studio and house feature a large patio. Using natural flagstones, a dining patio was also added further down in the existing meadow, while a metal pergola strung with lights adds ambiance to evening summer BBQs. A separate fire pit area has been set into the slope and is surrounded by a natural stone wall. The stone provides a beautiful contrast to the soft meadow and radiates the warmth of the fire, while offering shelter from the northern winds.

An abundance of planting was added to integrate the new buildings to their natural surroundings and to accentuate the views and vistas from all angles of the living spaces. The planting around the buildings is very lush in nature, reminiscent of a traditional farmer’s garden, while the planting around the dining patio and fire pit is mainly composed of native shrubs, grasses and wildflowers, making for a smooth transition into the surrounding meadow.

The space between the pocket house and studio features various fruit trees and berry shrubs, while remaining open for social gatherings and play. A patio swing has been included for all generations, conveying the playful spirit of the family.
