Métis Crossing is the first major Métis cultural interpretive center in Alberta. Located on river lot titles from the original Métis settlers on the Saskatchewan River, Métis Crossing is a cultural hub for Métis people, as well as a vibrant and growing tourist destination. The site has been designed to engage and excite visitors in activities that promote appreciation of Métis people, customs, and celebrations.

Over the years the landscape design has focused on integrate the new developments with the beautiful setting, taking into account all historic and natural features, the existing topography, and viewpoints, as well as honouring the historic site and the central role of the river – all of which imprints a distinct Metis Crossing signature throughout the site. We have been involved in the design of the Gathering Center, the Boutique Lodge, the Veteran’s memorial and are currently working on the masterplan for a retreat area.

The landscape design included an interpretative boardwalk, upgrading an existing playground, a picnic shelter and a communal fire pit and gathering area by the river. All planting consists of native species with a large amount of the plants being edible. All these plants were traditionally used by the Métis for food, medicinal or spiritual purposes, as well as for crafts.
