PROJECT

-

The historic Mc Kay Avenue Park is to become the first playground downtown. It will mainly cater to families living downtown as well as daycares located in the neighborhood, but also to school classes visiting the historic school buildings on site.

The playground design acknowledges the historic location and plays with the importance of the North Saskatchewan River now and then and it’s role of shaping the City. The design consists of several rubber hills symbolizing the embankments of the river valley.

Kids can run up and down the hills or hop from hill to hill. In the middle runs river, expressed as a different colour in the rubber. Children can cross the river using a rope climbing structure (reminiscent of the historic ferry) or just slide down the biggest hill. The rubber hills cater to a large age group and offer a lot of creative play value in summer and winter. The playground will also feature a disc swing as desired by the community.
